Curated by Our Team

The short version

How to shop wine and spirits by category

Thirty years behind the counter in Commack taught us that most people are not shopping for a label, they are shopping for a moment: a Tuesday dinner, a gift, a party, a quiet pour after a long day. The categories on this page are organized the way our staff actually thinks about the shelves, so you can start from the style you love and land on the right bottle fast.

Shop wine by the style you love

Reach for a bold red like Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Blends with steak and rich pasta, or a softer Merlot, Pinot Noir for roast chicken and mushrooms. Crisp whites such as Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc suit seafood and warm afternoons, while Chardonnay brings a rounder, creamier pour. For celebrations, go straight to Champagne, Sparkling Wine or a chilled Rose.

Shop spirits by the pour

Whiskey lovers can compare Bourbon, Single Malt Scotch, Irish Whiskey, Rye Whiskey side by side. For the bar cart, stock Vodka, Gin and Tequila & Mezcal for cocktails, Rum for tiki and punch, and a bottle of Cognac to sip neat. Mixing drinks? Our Cordials & Liqueurs and Mixers aisles have the rest.

Shop by region

Chasing a specific place in the glass? Explore Italian Red, Chianti and Barolo from Italy, French Red, French White from France, Spanish Red from Rioja, or something off the beaten path from Greek Wine. Region is often the fastest way to find a style you already trust.

Shop by occasion and value

Short on time? Start with our Best Sellers, Staff Picks. Hosting a crowd? Save with Cases of Wine, Box Wine. Need something for a dietary preference? Browse Kosher Wine & Spirits, Organic & Natural. And for a last-minute present, a Gift Cards is always the right size.

People also ask

Shopping by category, answered

The questions our customers and the search engines ask most, answered straight.

What are the main types of wine?

Wine falls into a few broad styles: red, white, rose, sparkling (including Champagne and Prosecco), plus dessert and fortified wines like Port. From there it splits by grape, so a red might be Cabernet, Pinot Noir or Merlot, and a white might be Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. Every one of those styles has its own category above.

What are the main types of spirits?

The spirit world is built on a handful of base liquors: whiskey (bourbon, Scotch, Irish and rye), vodka, gin, tequila, rum and brandy, plus cordials and liqueurs for mixing and sipping. Browse each by its own category above to see what we have in stock.

What is the difference between bourbon and whiskey?

All bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51 percent corn and aged in new charred oak barrels, which gives it those sweet notes of vanilla and caramel. Scotch, Irish and rye whiskeys follow different rules and taste distinct.

Is Chardonnay sweeter than Sauvignon Blanc?

Both are usually made as dry wines, so neither is truly sweet. Chardonnay tends to taste richer and rounder, especially when it sees oak, while Sauvignon Blanc is crisper and more citrusy. If you are new to white wine, Pinot Grigio and an unoaked Chardonnay are easy places to start.

What types of tequila are there?

Tequila is graded by how long it rests: Blanco is unaged and bright, Reposado spends a few months in oak, and Anejo is aged longer for a smoother, more complex pour. You will also find Mezcal, its smoky cousin, in our Tequila and Mezcal category above.

How do I choose a wine for a dinner party?

Match the weight of the wine to the food. Crisp whites like Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc suit seafood and chicken, while bold reds like Cabernet and red blends stand up to steak and rich pasta. Not sure? Take our wine taste quiz or call the shop and we will point you to the right bottle.
