Barolo is a DOCG red wine made entirely from Nebbiolo grown in 11 communes around the town of Barolo in Piedmont, Italy. It must age at least 38 months before release, and Riserva bottlings age at least 62 months. That legal minimum explains the structure: pale garnet color, high acid, firm tannin, and aromas of rose, tar, cherry, and dried herbs that deepen with bottle age. If you already enjoy the structure of a serious cabernet, Barolo is the Piedmontese answer, though it is lighter in color and higher in acid.
How to choose a Barolo
- By commune: Barolo and La Morra tend to be fragrant and approachable; Serralunga d’Alba and Monforte give darker, more tannic wines for cellaring; Cannubi bottlings, like Bersano Cannubi and Burlotto Cannubi, are the benchmark for elegance.
- By producer: Traditionalists age in large Slavonian oak; modernists use small French barriques for rounder fruit. Names like Giacomo Grimaldi Barolo and Grimaldi Barolo sit in the traditional camp, while Sandrone and Revello balance both.
- By vintage: Warm years give plusher fruit, cool years give perfume and grip. Ask us which vintages are drinking well now.
- By label: Bersano Barolo is a reliable entry point, while Stroppiana Bussia Riserva and Le Vigne Sandrone 2010 reward patience.
Flavor and price guidance
Expect tart cherry, rose petal, licorice, leather, and a firm, drying finish in youth. Decant young Barolo 1 to 2 hours and serve at 60 to 65 F with braised beef, wild mushroom risotto, or aged Parmigiano. Entry-level Barolo starts in the $30s to $50s, single-vineyard and Riserva bottlings climb from there, and top crus can reach several hundred dollars. Our staff can match a bottle to your budget without guesswork, and the wine taste quiz helps narrow the field if you are new to Nebbiolo.
