Jack Daniel's Bourbon
Tennessee whiskey from Lynchburg, charcoal mellowed since 1866.
The story behind Jack Daniel's
Jack Daniel registered his distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee in 1866, making it the oldest registered distillery in the United States. He learned the trade from Nathan "Nearest" Green, the enslaved man who became the distillery's first master distiller. The mash bill is 80 percent corn, 12 percent malted barley and 8 percent rye, drawn with iron free water from Cave Spring Hollow.
What separates Jack Daniel's from Kentucky bourbon is the Lincoln County Process: every drop of new distillate filters through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal before it meets a barrel. New charred American white oak, four years minimum, no additives. Federal rules would let it wear the bourbon label. The house has never wanted it.
