The story behind Macallan
Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and schoolteacher, took out a legal license in 1824, making Macallan one of the first distilleries in Scotland to operate above board under the 1823 Excise Act. The distillery sits in Craigellachie, in Speyside, and has been owned by the Edrington Group for decades. It runs some of the smallest copper pot stills in the region, under four meters tall, which keeps the spirit heavy and oily in the best sense.
The wood does most of the talking. Macallan commissions bespoke casks of European oak from northern Spain and American oak from Ohio, Missouri and Kentucky, then seasons them with Oloroso sherry in Jerez for 12 to 18 months before they ever hold whisky. No caramel coloring goes in. Every shade you see came out of the barrel.
