The story

The story behind Puerto Viejo

Viña Requingua was founded in 1961 by the Achurra family, and the Puerto Viejo name is a nod to the old Chilean port where their Basque ancestors first landed. The grapes come from estate vineyards in the Curicó and Maule Valleys, part of Chile's Central Valley, and the wine is estate grown and estate bottled. Winemaker Benoit Fitte, a Frenchman from Armagnac, ferments it traditionally and ages it in French and American oak.

We have poured this Puerto Viejo Syrah in Commack for years because it overdelivers at the price. Wine Enthusiast has tagged it a Best Buy across vintages, and that tracks with what we taste: blackberry, plum, black pepper, a lightly smoked finish. Thirty plus years behind this counter, and a nine dollar Chilean Syrah that drinks like this still gets my attention.

Good to know

Puerto Viejo questions, answered

Is Puerto Viejo Syrah and Shiraz the same thing?
Yes. Syrah and Shiraz are two names for the same grape variety. Puerto Viejo uses the terms interchangeably, and the style is New World: fruit forward with soft, smoky oak integration from French and American barrels.
Where are Puerto Viejo wines made?
They are produced and estate bottled at Viña Requingua in the Curicó Valley, part of Chile's Central Valley. Grapes come primarily from estate vineyards in the Curicó and Maule Valleys, and the wine is aged in French and American oak.
Who makes Puerto Viejo wine?
The brand is owned by the Achurra family, who founded Viña Requingua in 1961. The wine is made under head winemaker Benoit Fitte, who came to Chile from Armagnac in France. The name honors the old port where the family's Basque ancestors arrived.
Does Puerto Viejo Syrah contain sulfites?
Yes. Like virtually all commercial Chilean red wines, it contains sulfites as a natural byproduct of fermentation and as a preservative. If you are sulfite sensitive, ask your doctor before drinking any commercial wine.
Can I get Puerto Viejo Syrah delivered or pick it up locally?
Yes. Pick it up curbside in Commack free, or take free local delivery on orders over $250 across Nassau and Suffolk, same day or next day on local routes. Wine ships only to states where it is legal, confirmed at checkout.
