The story behind Mount Gay
Mount Gay holds a property deed dated February 20, 1703, which makes the Saint Lucy, Barbados distillery the oldest continuously running commercial rum house anywhere. The estate began as Mount Gilboa and took the Mount Gay name in 1801 to honor Sir John Gay Alleyne, the planter who pushed its cane and distilling work forward.
Every drop still starts with water from the original 1703 artesian well, filtered through the coral limestone that makes up Barbados itself. Molasses from Barbadian and Caribbean cane ferments on a house yeast strain, then runs through both double retort copper pot stills and column stills. Trudiann Branker, named Master Blender in 2019, blends those pot and column maturations, and no sugar goes into the core range.
