The story

The story behind Sterling Vineyards

Peter Newton, a British expatriate, and his partner Michael Stone founded Sterling Vineyards in 1964, and the first commercial vintage landed in 1969. The winery sits in Napa Valley, and the flagship Cabernet pulls from two very different neighborhoods: warm valley-floor parcels in Calistoga that give plush black fruit and soft tannins, and mountainside sites like Diamond Mountain that supply structure and backbone.

Grapes come in on a morning harvest, take a two-day cold soak for color, then age in a matrix of French, American and Hungarian oak for 11 to 20 months depending on tier. Sterling has been at this a long while, and the record shows it: first place at the 1981 Ottawa Wine Tasting, and official wine of the Primetime Emmy Awards for multiple seasons.

Which Sterling Vineyards is right for you?

Pricing here tracks the tiers honestly. The Sterling Vineyards Napa Cabernet sits at $26.99, which is fair money for valley-floor and mountain fruit with real oak behind it. Step up to the Platinum at $34.99 when you want more density and toast, or the 2007 SVR Reserve at $39.98 if you like a bottle with age already on it. The Merlot is $14.98, Chardonnay $11.99 and Sauvignon Blanc $12.99. Buy Sterling Vineyards online and pick it up curbside in Commack, or take local delivery.

Is Sterling Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon dry?
Yes, Sterling Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon is a dry red wine. It is fermented dry and aged in French, American and Hungarian oak, so the impression is black fruit and tannin rather than sweetness.
Where is Sterling Vineyards located?
