The story

The story behind Sauza

Don Cenobio Sauza founded the brand in 1873 at La Perseverancia in Tequila, Jalisco. He was the first to call the spirit tequila and the first to legally export it north. His grandson, Don Francisco Javier Sauza, petitioned the Mexican government for the Protected Designation of Origin in 1974. Suntory Global Spirits owns Sauza today.

Production is the part worth knowing. Casa Sauza runs raw agave fibers through a diffuser with hot water and steam, extracting the juice before cooking the nectar rather than baking whole piñas first. It uses roughly 5 kg of agave per liter against an industry average near 10. Column stills and copper lined stainless stills do the double distillation. Aged expressions rest in American white oak.

Who owns Sauza Tequila?
Suntory Global Spirits owns Sauza today. The brand began in 1873 with Don Cenobio Sauza at La Perseverancia in Tequila, Jalisco, and stayed in the Sauza family for generations before changing hands.
Is Sauza tequila 100 percent agave?
Not all of it. Sauza Silver and Gold are mixto tequilas blended with non agave sugars, while the Hornitos line is 100 percent blue agave. Check the label before you buy if that matters to you.
What is the difference between Sauza Silver and Sauza Gold?
Both are unaged mixto tequilas at 80 proof. Silver is clear and Gold carries added caramel coloring for its hue. The flavor difference is modest, so pick Gold if you want the classic golden look in a mixed drink.
How should I serve Sauza tequila?
Silver and Gold are built for mixing, so use them in Margaritas, Palomas and Tequila Sunrises. Hornitos Plata and Reposado can go on the rocks, where the fruit and pepper open up. Anejo and Black Barrel sip neat.
