The story

The story behind Michter's

Michter's traces to 1753, when Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk built a distillery in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania. It ran as Shenk's, then Bomberger's, took the Michter's name in the 1950s, and went bankrupt in 1989. Joseph J. Magliocco bought the abandoned trademark in the 1990s and rebuilt the brand in Louisville, Kentucky with Richard "Dick" Newman.

What separates Michter's is patience with wood. Distillate enters the barrel at 103 proof instead of the 125 proof industry ceiling, so more water is present to pull sugars from the oak. Staves air-dry for 18 to 60 months rather than kiln-dry, barrels are toasted before charring, and warehouses are heated through winter to push whiskey in and out of the grain. Drinks International named it the World's Most Admired Whiskey four years running, 2023 through 2026.

Michter's cocktails and pairings

Rich food suits these whiskeys. Skip the hot wings, since capsicum amplifies the alcohol bite and buries the wood sugars.
Good to know

Michter's questions, answered

Who owns Michter's?
Michter's is owned by Chatham Imports, the company Joseph J. Magliocco founded. He acquired the abandoned Michter's trademark in the 1990s and reestablished the brand in Louisville, Kentucky with Richard "Dick" Newman.
Is Michter's a bourbon or a whiskey?
Michter's makes both. The US*1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a bourbon. The Sour Mash and American expressions are labeled whiskey, and the rye releases are straight rye whiskey.
Why is Michter's so expensive?
Low barrel entry proof at 103 means more barrels and warehouse space per bottle. Long air-dried staves, toasted and charred barrels, and heated warehouses add cost, and allocated releases are scarce.
Where can I buy Michter's bourbon near Commack?
Long Island Wine & Spirit Merchant at 1171 Jericho Turnpike in Commack stocks Michter's. Order online for free curbside pickup, or get same-day or next-day delivery across Nassau and Suffolk, free over $250.
What is low barrel entry proof?
It means whiskey enters the barrel at 103 proof instead of the 125 proof industry maximum. More water in the barrel extracts richer wood sugars and reduces astringency, at the cost of more barrels.
