The story

The story behind La Rioja Alta

La Rioja Alta was founded on July 10, 1890 in Haro, in Rioja Alta's Barrio de la Estación, by five grower families from Rioja and the Basque country. Doña Saturnina García Cid y Gárete served as first president. In 1904 Don Alfredo Ardanza folded his own Bodegas Ardanza into the house, and descendants of those founders still own it.

What separates La Rioja Alta is patience and cooperage. The winery builds its own barrels from American oak shipped in as raw planks, racks by candlelight every six months, and bottles unfiltered. Tempranillo leads, with Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha in support. The Gran Reservas sit four to six years in cask plus years in bottle, well beyond what Rioja law requires.

Stock on several older vintages is limited, so call ahead before you drive over.

Good to know

La Rioja Alta questions, answered

Is La Rioja Alta a good wine?
Yes. La Rioja Alta is one of Rioja's historic houses, founded in 1890 in Haro, and was ranked third among the World's Most Admired Wine Brands by Drinks International. Its Gran Reserva 904 took Best Red Wine at the Verema Awards for the 2016 vintage.
What grape is La Rioja Alta made from?
Tempranillo is the primary grape across the portfolio, blended with small amounts of Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha. Viña Ardanza Reserva leans on roughly 80 percent Tempranillo and 20 percent Garnacha, while the Gran Reservas add about 10 percent Graciano.
How should I serve La Rioja Alta?
Serve it slightly cool at 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. The flagship Gran Reservas benefit from decanting 30 to 60 minutes to open tertiary notes of leather, cedar and tobacco. Pair with roasted lamb, ribeye, game or aged Manchego.
Do you deliver La Rioja Alta locally?
Yes. We offer same-day or next-day delivery across Nassau and Suffolk, free local delivery on orders over $250, and free curbside pickup at our Commack shop. Call (631) 343-7200 and we will confirm stock on older vintages.
What is a Rioja Reserva?
Reserva is a Spanish aging classification for Rioja. The wine must spend a minimum period in barrel and bottle before release, and La Rioja Alta routinely ages its Reservas and Gran Reservas well beyond those legal minimums.
