The story

The story behind Gekkeikan

Gekkeikan started brewing in 1637, when Jiemon Okura opened a sake house in Fushimi, the Kyoto district known for soft, pure spring water. The family ran it as Kasagiya until 1905, when the name Gekkeikan, or laurel wreath, was adopted as a pledge to commercial excellence. In 1909 the company founded the Okura Sake Brewing Research Institute and went on to commercialize preservative free bottled sake in 1911 and the industry's first year round brewing system in 1961.

In 1989 Gekkeikan opened its US brewery in Folsom, California, brewing with Sacramento Valley rice and American River water. That is why a bottle of Gekkeikan sake has sat on our shelves for three decades: rice, water, koji and yeast, nothing else, and no added sulfites.

Gekkeikan Traditional goes with tempura, sashimi and lighter white meats; warm it to about 113F and the dry edge softens.
Good to know

Gekkeikan questions, answered

Is Gekkeikan sake gluten free?
Yes. Gekkeikan is brewed from rice, water, koji rice and yeast only, so it contains no gluten, no added sulfites and no artificial preservatives. Anyone avoiding wheat or barley can drink it without checking a label twice.
What is Gekkeikan sake made from?
It is made from four things: rice, water, koji rice and yeast. The Kyoto brewery uses local soft spring water, while the Folsom, California facility brews with Sacramento Valley rice and American River water.
Should Gekkeikan sake be served warm or chilled?
Both work. Traditional and Black & Gold can be warmed to roughly 113F to round out the dry profile, while premium bottlings like Horin and Haiku should stay chilled so the floral aromatics survive.
What is the alcohol content of Gekkeikan sake?
Most Gekkeikan expressions sit between 14.6 and 15.6 percent alcohol by volume, roughly 29 to 31 proof. The plum bottlings run lower. Check the label on the bottle you buy for the exact figure.
Do you deliver Gekkeikan sake on Long Island?
Yes. We offer same day or next day delivery across Nassau and Suffolk, free local delivery over $250, and free curbside pickup at our Commack store. Sake is a wine product and ships only to states where it is legal, confirmed at checkout.
