The story

The story behind Cinzano

Cinzano started in Turin in 1757, when brothers Giovanni Giacomo and Carlo Stefano Cinzano ran an herbalist and confectionery shop and began infusing Piedmont wine with wild Alpine herbs. By 1786 the House of Savoy had granted them a Royal Warrant, and in 1840 the family delivered the Italian sparkling wine the royals commissioned to rival Champagne.

The Rosso recipe still carries 35 botanicals, wormwood, marjoram, thyme, nutmeg, juniper and orange peel among them, steeped in alcohol and married into a Trebbiano white wine base. The amber color comes from caramel, not red grapes. The blend rests seven days, stabilizes two to three more, then bottles. Campari bought the brand in 1999; Gruppo Caffo 1915 now holds the vermouth and sparkling side.

Cinzano cocktails and pairings

Vermouth wants salt, fat, and citrus before dinner. Keep the plate small and the glass cold.
Good to know

Cinzano questions, answered

Is Cinzano a wine or a spirit?
Cinzano vermouth is a fortified wine, not a spirit. It starts as a white wine base, primarily Trebbiano, then gets fortified with neutral spirits to raise alcohol and preserve it, plus herbs, sugar, and caramel.
Does Cinzano Vermouth expire or go bad?
Yes, opened vermouth oxidizes because it is wine. Unopened bottles keep for years, but once opened, seal it, refrigerate it, and finish it within one to two months for peak flavor.
Is Cinzano Rosso made from red grapes?
No. Cinzano Rosso is made from white Trebbiano grapes. The dark amber color comes entirely from caramelized sugar added during sweetening and botanical blending, not from red grape skins.
What is the difference between Cinzano and Martini & Rossi?
Both are historic Turin houses with different secret recipes. Mixologists generally find Cinzano Rosso sweeter, rounder, and heavier on vanilla and floral notes, while Martini & Rossi leans drier and more herbaceously bitter.
