About this bottle
Nestled within the esteemed selection at Long Island Wine & Spirit Merchant, the Taylor Fladgate – Vargellas Port 2005 750mL stands as a testament to the storied tradition of Portuguese winemaking. This exquisite port is carefully crafted in the Douro Valley of Portugal, a region renowned for its unparalleled ability to produce fortified wines of exceptional quality.
The Taylor Fladgate Vargellas 2005, with its deep ruby color and rich, velvety texture, encapsulates the essence of vintage port. Its bouquet is a complex symphony of ripe, dark fruits, with blackberry and plum notes leading the way, complemented by subtle undertones of cocoa, spices, and a hint of violets, revealing the wine’s layered complexity and depth. On the palate, it delivers a harmonious balance between sweetness and acidity, with tannins that are robust yet silky, culminating in a finish that is both opulent and enduring.
This particular vintage hails from the single-quinta (estate) of Vargellas, a vineyard that is integral to the Taylor Fladgate portfolio and celebrated for producing ports of extraordinary character and aging potential. The 2005 Vargellas is no exception, offering a drinking experience that, while impressive now, promises to evolve beautifully over time.

The Long Island Wine & Spirit Merchant TeamTasting notes
Nose
Dried fig and black plum first, then violet, a crack of black pepper, and a faint warm cherry skin.
Palate
Full and dense, with layers of cherry and plum, fig, and a firm tannin grip. Peppery spice lifts the midpalate, sweetness stays in check, and the structure feels built to last.
Finish
Long and warm, echoing dark fruit and pepper, with tannin that leaves a structured, drying trail.
How to serve and what to pour it with
Serve at cellar temperature, around 62 to 65 degrees, in a tulip-shaped glass. Decant for an hour or two if opening young to soften the tannin and open the fruit. Pour a small taste first to check the sediment, and stop decanting when you see it. A narrow decanter works fine.
