The story

The story behind Taylor Fladgate

Taylor Fladgate traces to 1692, when English merchant Job Bearsley set up in the Douro Valley. The house took its present name, Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman, in 1838, and it remains family run as the flagship of The Fladgate Partnership.

The grapes are native Portuguese varieties, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca, grown on steep terraced vineyards and picked by hand. Fermentation is stopped partway with a 77 percent neutral grape brandy, which keeps the natural sugar and lifts the alcohol. The finest lots are still foot trodden in granite lagares, then aged in seasoned oak in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Good to know

Taylor Fladgate questions, answered

Is Taylor Fladgate a tawny or ruby port?
Taylor Fladgate makes both. Ruby styles stay fruit forward and dark, while Tawny styles age in oak and turn nutty and amber, and the house also releases Vintage Port and dated Single Harvest Colheitas.
What is the difference between Taylor Fladgate Ruby and Tawny Port?
Ruby Port is aged briefly in large vats to keep its red fruit and color. Tawny Port spends years in seasoned oak casks, oxidizing slowly into nut, caramel and dried fruit notes with a lighter amber hue.
How should you serve Taylor Fladgate Port?
Serve Tawny and Ruby Port slightly cool, around 60 to 65 degrees, in a small glass. Vintage Port benefits from decanting and a little more warmth. Pour a modest measure, since the wine is fortified.
Is Taylor Fladgate Port sweet?
Yes. Fermentation is stopped with neutral grape brandy before all the sugar converts, so the wine keeps natural sweetness. The impression ranges from lush in Ruby to drier and nuttier in older Tawnies.
Can I get Taylor Fladgate Port delivered or pick it up locally?
Yes. We offer same-day or next-day delivery across Nassau and Suffolk, free curbside pickup in Commack, and free local delivery over $250. Spirits and fortified wines stay local, so call the store to confirm stock.
