The story

The story behind Wahaka

Wahaka is a small producer name you will find on both tequila and mezcal shelves, and that is the first thing worth knowing. Tequila must be made from blue Weber agave, almost entirely in Jalisco around the town of Tequila. Mezcal is broader: any agave species, roasted in earthen pits, made across several Mexican states, Oaxaca most famously. A house working in both is telling you the agave, not the label category, is the point.

We have carried these bottles for years because they drink clean and honest. The Reposado shows the rounder, oak rested side of the house. The Jabali is a wild agave mezcal, and wild agave means scarcity, so expect a higher price and a more savory, vegetal profile. Sip them slowly and you will taste the difference between cultivated and wild.

Buying guidance

Which Wahaka is right for you?

Pricing here is straightforward. The Wahaka Mezcal sits at $35.99, the everyday bottle of the group and the one we reorder most. The Reposado runs $45.99, a fair number for an oak rested tequila from a small producer. The Jabali is $125.99, and that is wild agave math: scarce plants, long maturity, small lots. Buy the Mezcal and Reposado together and you have a full tasting for under $82.

Wahaka cocktails and pairings

Serve mezcal in a copita, neat, at room temperature, with orange and a sal de gusano rim if you like. Reposado wants something richer.

Good to know

Wahaka questions, answered

What is the difference between Wahaka tequila and Wahaka mezcal?
Tequila is made only from blue Weber agave, usually in Jalisco, while mezcal can use many agave species and is pit roasted. Wahaka makes both, so the Reposado is tequila and the Jabali and Mezcal are mezcal.
What does Jabali mean on a mezcal label?
Jabali is the common name for a wild agave species used in mezcal. Wild agave takes years to mature and cannot be farmed at scale, which is why bottles like Wahaka Jabali cost more and vary batch to batch.
Is Wahaka Reposado good for sipping or mixing?
Both. Reposado spends time in oak, so it is rounder and sweeter than a blanco, which makes it pleasant neat. It also holds up in a margarita or an old fashioned where a softer agave backbone helps.
Can you ship Wahaka to me?
We ship spirits to the states where it is legal, confirmed at checkout. Wahaka is available for free curbside pickup at our Commack store and for local delivery across Nassau and Suffolk, same day or next day, with free delivery over $250.
How should I store and serve an open bottle of mezcal?
Keep it upright, corked, away from heat and sunlight, and it will hold for months. Pour neat at room temperature in a small copita; a drop of water opens the smoke without flattening the agave.
