The story

The story behind The Prisoner

The Prisoner launched in 2000 with 385 cases, the work of winemaker Dave Phinney in Napa Valley. He built it on the old Italian immigrant idea of mixed blacks, a field blend of whatever red grapes grew together, rather than a single varietal. The core is Zinfandel, backed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Charbono, drawn from more than 100 independent growers across Northern California. Constellation Brands bought the brand in 2016 for $285 million.

We have carried The Prisoner through most of that run. The label, Goya's etching Le Petit Prisoner, has never needed a sales pitch. Fifteen months in French and American oak gives the flagship its density, and the portfolio has grown well past one bottle.

The Prisoner cocktails and pairings

Serve it at 60 to 65 degrees and give it 30 minutes of air. The high alcohol wants fat and char.
Good to know

The Prisoner questions, answered

Is The Prisoner a Zinfandel?
The Prisoner Red is a Zinfandel based blend, not a single varietal wine. Zinfandel leads the mix, joined by Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Charbono, following the old Napa mixed blacks tradition.
Who owns The Prisoner wine?
Constellation Brands owns The Prisoner, having acquired the brand in 2016 for $285 million. Winemaker Dave Phinney developed it and launched the first vintage in 2000 at just 385 cases.
What does The Prisoner red blend taste like?
It is dense and ripe, with dark berry and jammy fruit over oak and soft tannin. Fifteen months in French and American oak adds vanilla and spice, and the finish runs warm at 15.2 percent alcohol.
How should I serve The Prisoner?
Serve it slightly cool, between 60 and 65 degrees, in a wide bowled red wine glass. Decant or let the bottle breathe 30 minutes first, and pair it with roasted lamb, grilled steak or barbecue.
Can I get The Prisoner delivered or pick it up locally?
Yes. We offer same-day or next-day delivery across Nassau and Suffolk, free curbside pickup in Commack, and free local delivery on orders over $250. Wine shipping goes only to states where it is legal, confirmed at checkout.
