The story

The story behind Sutter Home

Sutter Home's story starts in 1874, when Swiss-German immigrant John Thomann founded the estate in St. Helena, Napa Valley. After Prohibition, Italian brothers John and Mario Trinchero revived it in 1948, and their family still runs it today. In 1975, winemaker Bob Trinchero bled juice off his Zinfandel tanks, a saignée technique, and a stuck fermentation left a slightly sweet pink wine. He bottled it anyway, and White Zinfandel was born, creating the blush category and earning a place in the Smithsonian.
