The story

The story behind St. Francis

Joe Martin planted St. Francis in Sonoma County in 1971 and opened the winery with Lloyd Canton in 1979. The fruit comes largely from North Coast estate properties, Wild Oak and Behler Ranch among them, farmed sustainably for decades. The flagship red blend pulls from both Bordeaux and Rhone traditions: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Mourvedre and Malbec in one bottle.

Each varietal is handled on its own terms. Syrah and Mourvedre ferment in open top tanks for earthy depth, Cabernet and Merlot in closed top tanks for structure, and the Malbec co-ferments with a portion of the Cabernet. A cold soak locks in color before French oak aging, then the master blend comes together. That patience shows in the glass.

St. Francis cocktails and pairings

St. Francis red blends want fat and char. Think grilled lamb, braised short ribs, aged cheddar. Keep a decanter handy for the Cabernet.

St. Francis questions, answered

Who owns St. Francis Winery?
St. Francis Winery and Vineyards was founded by Joe Martin, who planted the vineyard in 1971 and opened the winery with business partner Lloyd Canton in 1979. It remains a Sonoma County producer known for estate fruit and sustainable farming.
What grapes are in St. Francis Red Blend?
The flagship red blend typically combines five varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Mourvedre and Malbec. Each is fermented and aged separately in French oak before the final blend is assembled, bridging Bordeaux and Rhone styles.
Is St. Francis wine sweet or dry?
St. Francis reds are dry. The Red Blend, Claret, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon finish dry with oak aging, while the Old Vines Zinfandel shows ripe fruit but stays dry. None of these are sweet wines.
