The story

The story behind Sandeman

George Sandeman founded the house in 1790 in London, starting with a 300 pound loan from his father. The wine itself comes from Portugal's Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site of steep terraced vineyards, and ages in Sandeman's cellars across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. Sogrape has owned the brand since 2001.

Sandeman built its reputation on consistency. Grapes like Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cao are hand picked, fermented, then fortified with neutral grape spirit to hold the natural sweetness. The 1805 cask branding and the caped silhouette known as The Don came later. We have poured these bottles for decades.

Good to know

Sandeman questions, answered

Is Sandeman a Portuguese port?
Yes. Sandeman is a Portuguese Port produced in the Douro Valley and aged in Vila Nova de Gaia, though the house was founded in London in 1790 by George Sandeman. Sogrape has owned it since 2001.
What is the difference between Sandeman Ruby and Tawny Port?
Ruby Port ages briefly in large oak vats and keeps fresh red fruit, while Tawny Port spends longer in smaller casks and turns caramel and nutty. Both are fortified and sweet, but the aging style separates them.
How should you serve Sandeman Port?
Serve Ruby and LBV at cellar temperature, around 60 to 65 degrees, and Tawny slightly cool at 55 to 60 degrees. Do not serve Tawny warm. Pour into a small glass and give it a moment to open.
Is Sandeman Port sweet?
Yes. Fermentation is stopped by adding neutral grape spirit, which preserves the grapes' natural sugar. The result is a sweet fortified wine, though aged Tawnies taste drier and more savory than Ruby.
