The story

The story behind Rodney Strong

Rodney Strong founded his winery in Sonoma County in 1959, the 13th bonded winery in the county, after a first career as a professional dancer. In 1965 he planted Chardonnay in the ground that later became the Chalk Hill AVA, among the first to do it there. The Klein family has owned and operated the house since 1989.

We have poured these bottles across our Commack counter for decades. The house ferments about 60 percent of its Sonoma County Chardonnay in French oak for six months with monthly lees stirring, then cold-ferments the other 40 percent in stainless steel. Roughly a quarter to 40 percent goes through malolactic fermentation, so you get the butter and the acid in the same glass. Every Chardonnay here sits at 13.5% ABV.

Rodney Strong cocktails and pairings

Serve it at 45 to 50 degrees in a standard white wine glass, no cocktail shaker. The oak wants roasted chicken, grilled asparagus, seared tuna, or a wedge of Brie.
Good to know

Rodney Strong questions, answered

Is Rodney Strong Chardonnay oaked?
Yes, partly. About 60 percent of the Sonoma County Chardonnay ferments and ages in French oak for six months with monthly lees stirring, while the other 40 percent stays in stainless steel for freshness.
What does Rodney Strong Chardonnay taste like?
It shows green apple and citrus from the stainless portion, layered with cream, toast, and a buttery edge from the oak and partial malolactic fermentation. Bright acidity keeps the finish from going flat.
Who owns Rodney Strong Vineyards?
The Klein family has owned and operated Rodney Strong Vineyards since 1989. Founder Rodney Strong started the winery in Sonoma County in 1959, the 13th bonded winery in the county.
What is the alcohol content of Rodney Strong Chardonnay?
Every Rodney Strong Chardonnay expression is bottled at 13.5% ABV. That is a balanced middle ground, enough body for roasted chicken yet light enough to pour well chilled at 45 to 50 degrees.
Do you deliver Rodney Strong Chardonnay locally or ship it?
