The story

The story behind Remy Martin

Remy Martin was founded in 1724 by a winegrower of the same name in the Charente region of western France. The house distills only white grapes, mostly Ugni Blanc with smaller portions of Colombard and Folle Blanche, and it makes nothing but Fine Champagne Cognac, a protected appellation requiring at least 50 percent Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie blended with Petite Champagne.

Double distillation runs October to March in small Charente copper pot stills, and Remy Martin distills 100 percent of its wine on the fine lees, which builds depth. The spirit matures in open-grain French oak from the Limousin forest across 29 cellars in Merpins, blended under fifth Cellar Master Baptiste Loiseau.

Good to know

Remy Martin questions, answered

Is Remy Martin a cognac or a brandy?
Remy Martin is a Cognac, which is a type of brandy. It is produced in the Cognac region of France under AOC rules, and this house makes only Fine Champagne Cognac from Grande and Petite Champagne grapes.
What does VSOP mean on a Remy Martin bottle?
VSOP stands for Very Superior Old Pale. It means the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend has aged at least four years in oak, though Remy Martin ages its VSOP considerably longer than the legal minimum.
What is the difference between Remy Martin VSOP and 1738?
The 1738 Accord Royal is a separate blend built for a toastier, rounder profile with more oak and butterscotch. VSOP is brighter and more fruit forward. Both are 80 proof Fine Champagne Cognac.
How should I drink Remy Martin Cognac?
Drink it neat in a tumbler or short stemmed tasting glass, at room temperature. A single ice cube is fine if you prefer it cooler. Younger expressions like VS also work well in a Sidecar.
