The story

The story behind Pinhook

Pinhook takes its name from pinhooking, the old Kentucky horse trade of buying young thoroughbreds, raising them, and selling them ready to run. Sean Josephs, a sommelier and restaurateur, founded the brand in 2010 with Jay Peterson and Charles Fulford, and he blends whiskey the way he once chose wine: each annual release is its own vintage, proofed to flatter that year's barrels rather than matched to a fixed house number.

Since 2017 the proprietary non-GMO mash bills, including the standard 75 percent corn, 15 percent rye, 10 percent malted barley bourbon, have been distilled at Castle & Key in Frankfort, Kentucky, on limestone filtered spring water. Earlier barrels came from MGP in Indiana, and the Vertical Series still follows one lot of those from age 4 up to 12. Every label carries a real racehorse and its silks.

Pinhook cocktails and pairings

Pinhook was built by a restaurateur, so treat it like one. Pour the flagship with roasted pork belly or glazed duck, and save the high proof for dark chocolate and aged gouda.
Good to know

Pinhook questions, answered

Who actually distills Pinhook Bourbon?
Pinhook distills its proprietary recipes at Castle & Key Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. The Vertical Series uses barrels originally distilled by MGP in Indiana, then aged and blended in Kentucky.
Why does the proof change on Pinhook bottles every year?
Pinhook follows a vintage approach rather than a fixed corporate proof. Master Blender Sean Josephs picks a custom proof for each batch to optimize the flavor of those specific barrels.
Is Pinhook Bourbon hard to find?
No. Pinhook is built for regular retail availability, and its core bourbon and rye lines are distributed broadly. Limited runs like the Vertical Series and store picks have finite quantities.
What does the horse on the Pinhook label mean?
The labels show real active thoroughbreds managed by Bourbon Lane Stables. The geometric designs and colored wax represent the jockey silks worn by the riders of those horses.
How long is Pinhook Bourbon aged, and can I get it delivered?
Flagship straight bourbon is aged at least 3 to 4 years, and the Vertical Series tracks aging up to 12 years. We offer same-day or next-day delivery across Nassau and Suffolk, plus free curbside pickup in Commack.
