The story

The story behind Old Forester

George Garvin Brown founded Old Forester in Louisville, Kentucky in 1870 and sold it only in sealed glass bottles, a guarantee against tampering at a time when whiskey came by the barrel. It is the one bourbon continuously produced and sold by its founding family before, during, and after Prohibition. The house mash bill is 72% corn, 18% rye, 10% malted barley, fermented sour mash on the proprietary 1B yeast strain.

Barrels come from the family's own Brown-Forman Cooperage, and the heat-cycled warehouses in Shively, Kentucky keep the wood working through winter. We have poured these bottles across this counter for three decades, and the 1910 double-barrel finish still stops people mid-sentence.

Old Forester questions, answered

Who founded Old Forester?
George Garvin Brown founded Old Forester in 1870 in Louisville, Kentucky. It was sold only in sealed glass bottles to guarantee quality, and it is the only bourbon continuously produced and sold by its founding family through Prohibition.
What is the Old Forester mash bill?
The signature recipe is 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley, a high rye mash bill fermented with the proprietary 1B yeast. The 1924 expression uses a separate historic bill of 79% corn, 11% rye, and 10% malted barley.
Is Old Forester a good bourbon?
Old Forester is a well regarded Kentucky straight bourbon with a long track record. The 1910, 1920, and 1924 expressions each earned Gold Medals at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and the range covers value to luxury pricing.
What is the difference between Old Forester 1910 and 1920?
1910 Old Fine Whisky is 93 proof and finishes in a second heavily charred new oak barrel at low entry proof, giving dark chocolate and fudge. 1920 Prohibition Style is 115 proof, unfiltered in style, with barrel char, dark fruit, and cocoa.
