The story

The story behind Korbel

Francis Korbel and his brothers Anton and Joseph founded Korbel in 1882 in Guerneville, in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. The family has been at it ever since, and the Heck family still owns and runs the winery today, with Brown-Forman handling sales and marketing since 1965.

Every bottle is made by the methode champenoise, the traditional method, with the secondary fermentation happening inside the same bottle you pour from. The grapes are cool-climate California fruit, mostly Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, French Colombard and Pinot Noir, blended across vintages in stainless steel to keep the house style steady year after year. The label reads California Champagne, a designation grandfathered under U.S. labeling rules and the 2006 U.S.-EC wine agreement.

Buying guidance

Which Korbel is right for you?

Korbel sits where good sparkling wine should: affordable enough to open on a Tuesday, serious enough to pour at a wedding. The Brut and Brut Rose 750mL both run $15.99 here, and the Natural, our driest, is $17.99. Smaller formats start at $4.99 for a 187mL Brut and $6.99 for a 375mL Extra Dry, with the Brut four-pack of 187mL at $19.99. Buy Korbel online for pickup in Commack or local delivery, and you are drinking Sonoma sparkling without the Champagne markup.

Korbel cocktails and pairings

Serve Korbel well chilled, 40 to 45 degrees, in a flute or tulip glass. Brut and Extra Dry handle salt and fat; the Rose likes smoke and shellfish.

Good to know

Korbel questions, answered

Is Korbel actually Champagne?
Korbel is labeled California Champagne, a semi-generic term grandfathered under U.S. law and the 2006 U.S.-EC wine agreement. It is made in Sonoma County by the traditional method, not in the Champagne region of France.
Where is Korbel made?
Korbel is made in Guerneville, in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, California. Francis Korbel and his brothers founded the winery there in 1882, and the Heck family owns it today.
What grapes are in Korbel Brut?
Korbel Brut blends Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, French Colombard and Pinot Noir from cool-climate California vineyards. The Natural goes further, at 65 percent Pinot Noir and 35 percent Chardonnay, for a bone-dry style.
How is Korbel sparkling wine made?
Every bottle is made by the methode champenoise, the traditional method. The secondary fermentation happens inside the individual bottle you pour from, and non-vintage blends are kept consistent in stainless steel across years.
