The story

The story behind Kedem

Kedem began in the United States in 1948, when Eugene Herzog, a Holocaust refugee from Czechoslovakia, arrived in New York and took work at a small Lower East Side winery. His family had supplied royal cellars in Europe back to 1848. By 1958 he and his sons owned the place, and the enterprise grew into the Royal Wine Corporation.

Production sits in Marlboro, New York, in the Hudson Valley, with Concord and Catawba grapes drawn from New York State. The wines are Mevushal, flash pasteurized under rabbinical supervision so they hold kosher status even when opened and poured by others. That is the whole point, and it is why Kedem has anchored American kosher tables for generations.

Chill every bottle. The sugar needs cold to stay balanced against brisket, gefilte fish and babka.
Good to know

Kedem questions, answered

Is Kedem wine Mevushal?
Yes. Most standard Kedem commercial wines are Mevushal, flash pasteurized under strict Orthodox rabbinical supervision. That means the wine stays kosher even if opened or poured by someone who is not Sabbath observant.
Who owns Kedem wine?
Kedem is owned and operated by the Royal Wine Corporation, the Herzog family business. It sits within the Kayco food group, the largest distributor of kosher specialty foods and beverages in the United States.
What kind of grapes are used in Kedem wine?
Kedem wines are made primarily from native American Concord grapes grown in upstate New York. That gives the wine its distinctly sweet, jammy and foxy profile, with Catawba and table grapes in the blend.
Does Kedem wine need to be refrigerated after opening?
Yes. Seal the bottle tightly and refrigerate it once opened. The high sugar content helps sweet Kedem expressions hold their flavor a bit longer than dry table wines, but cold storage is still the rule.
