The story

The story behind Jose Cuervo

Don José Antonio de Cuervo received a royal land writ from the King of Spain in 1758 to grow blue agave in Tequila, Jalisco. His son took the first commercial license to sell Vino Mezcal de Tequila in 1795, and the family has been at it ever since. Production runs through La Rojeña, Latin America's oldest active distillery, founded in 1812 and still family owned by the Beckmann descendants.

Agave azul matures seven to ten years in volcanic soil before harvest. Piñas slow cook in masonry brick ovens for 36 to 40 hours, then ferment and double distill through copper pot and column stills. That patience is why Jose Cuervo has stayed on our shelf for three decades.

Is Jose Cuervo real tequila?
Yes. Mexican law requires tequila be distilled from at least 51% blue Weber agave in designated states. Especial meets that mixto standard, while Tradicional and Reserva de la Familia are 100% agave.
Which Jose Cuervo is 100% agave?
The Tradicional line and the Reserva de la Familia line are made entirely from 100% blue Weber agave. Especial Gold and Silver are mixtos and can contain up to 49% non agave cane sugar.
What is the difference between Jose Cuervo Gold and Silver?
Especial Silver is clear and unaged. Especial Gold is a joven blended with a small amount of rested tequila plus caramel coloring for its golden hue and sweeter notes. Both are 80 proof mixtos.
Where is Jose Cuervo made?
All Jose Cuervo tequila is produced in Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico, mostly at the historic La Rojeña distillery, using agave grown in local volcanic soil fields.
