The story behind Glenfiddich
Glenfiddich is made in Dufftown, Speyside, by William Grant and his family. Construction started in 1886, and the first spirit ran off the stills on Christmas Day, 1887. The distillery is still independent and family owned by William Grant & Sons, which is rarer than it sounds in Scotch.
The mash bill is 100 percent malted barley, yeast, and water from the Robbie Dhu Spring. Fermentation happens in wooden washbacks, distillation runs through uniquely shaped copper pot stills tended by an on site coppersmith, and the distillery keeps its own cooperage. In 1961 the triangular bottle arrived, designed by Hans Schleger for water, air, and malted barley.
