The story

The story behind Glen Ellen

Glen Ellen Winery started in 1980, founded by Bruno Benziger and his son Mike in the Sonoma County town that gave the brand its name. The family built it into a volume success, sold it to Heublein in 1993, and The Wine Group has owned it since 2002. Today the Merlot carries a broad California appellation, blended from warm-climate vineyards across the state for a consistent taste year to year.

Fermentation happens in stainless steel, then a light touch of oak or oak chips adds vanilla and soft spice without heavy wood. It is a dry red table wine at 13.5% ABV, and it has been a steady seller on our shelves for decades because it does exactly what a weeknight red should.

Glen Ellen questions, answered

Who currently owns Glen Ellen wine?
Glen Ellen wine is owned by The Wine Group LLC, the second-largest wine producer in the United States. The company acquired the brand in 2002, after earlier ownership under Heublein following the Benziger family's 1993 sale.
Where is Glen Ellen Merlot made?
Glen Ellen Merlot is made in California under the broad California appellation. The original winery began in the town of Glen Ellen in Sonoma County, but the modern brand blends grapes from across the state and bottles at The Wine Group's high-capacity facilities.
What is the alcohol content of Glen Ellen Merlot?
Glen Ellen Merlot carries an alcohol by volume of 13.5%, standard for a medium-bodied California red. That puts it in line with most everyday Merlot on the shelf, so pour and pace it accordingly.
Is Glen Ellen Merlot a dry or sweet wine?
Glen Ellen Merlot is a dry red table wine. Forward fruit flavors of ripe cherry and juicy plum give a perception of sweetness, but residual sugar is very low, so the finish stays dry.
