The story

The story behind Four Roses

Four Roses was trademarked in 1888 by Paul Jones Jr., who moved the operation to Louisville's Whiskey Row. Today the bourbon is distilled in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky and aged in single-story rackhouses at Cox's Creek, where the lack of stacked floors keeps temperature swings gentle and the barrels consistent.

What separates Four Roses is arithmetic. Two mash bills (B at 60 percent corn and 35 percent rye, E at 75 corn and 20 rye) crossed with five yeast strains give ten distinct bourbons, each carrying a four-letter code. Standard bottles blend those recipes to a target; single barrels isolate one. In April 2026 E&J Gallo closed a $775 million purchase of the brand from Kirin, returning it to American ownership.

Good to know

Four Roses questions, answered

Is Four Roses a bourbon or a whiskey?
Four Roses is a straight bourbon whiskey. It is made in Kentucky from a corn based mash bill, aged in new charred oak, and bottled at 80 proof or higher, which meets every legal requirement for the bourbon label.
What is the difference between Four Roses Small Batch and Single Barrel?
Small Batch blends four recipes to a consistent 90 proof profile. Single Barrel isolates the OBSV recipe from one barrel at 100 proof, so it shows the delicate fruit and spice of that code rather than a blended target.
Why does Four Roses use ten recipes?
Two mash bills and five yeast strains combine into ten distinct bourbons, each with a four-letter code. Blending those liquids lets the distillery hit exact flavor benchmarks, and single barrel releases let you taste one recipe alone.
Do you deliver Four Roses bourbon on Long Island?
Yes. We offer same-day or next-day delivery across Nassau and Suffolk, free local delivery over $250, and free curbside pickup at our Commack store. Spirits ship to the states where it is legal, confirmed at checkout; call (631) 343-7200 to confirm stock.
How should you serve Four Roses bourbon?
Serve the flagship over ice or in cocktails, and take Small Batch, Single Barrel, and Select neat or with a splash of water to open the rye spice. Pair with smoked meat, dark chocolate, pecans, or aged cheddar.
