Douglass Hill Shiraz/syrah
California Shiraz, priced for the Tuesday night table.
The story behind Douglass Hill
Douglass Hill Shiraz comes out of California, not the Rhône and not South Australia, and that distinction matters once you taste it. The Syrah grape is French by birth and Australian by fame, but this bottling is Central Valley fruit, machine harvested warm and fermented in stainless steel to lock in plum, cherry and raspberry. Bronco Wine Company, the outfit behind Charles Shaw, makes it at volume, which is why the price stays where it does.
Oak shows up as vanillin accents rather than expensive barrel time, so the finish is soft and lightly spiced. At 12.5% ABV it sits lighter than the 14.5% Australian versions, and it is filtered and stabilized to drink the day you buy it. We have poured it for years as the bottle that never argues with dinner.

Which Douglass Hill is right for you?
Douglass Hill Shiraz 750mL runs $6.99 at our Commack counter, and the Merlot matches it at $6.99. The Moscato lists at $6.98 but is currently out of stock, so call (631) 343-7200 before you make the trip for that one. At this money you can buy six for a backyard cookout and not think twice. Compare that to the $4.49 to $5.99 grocery range and remember you are getting a person who has sold this wine for decades, not a shelf tag. Buy Douglass Hill online or walk in and we will bag it.
