The story

The story behind Dewar's

John Dewar opened a spirit merchant shop in Perth, Scotland in 1846. His sons, John Alexander and Tommy, took the blend global, and Tommy is the one who pushed the Scotch Highball into New York bars in 1892. Dewar's still builds its blend around Aberfeldy single malt from the Highlands, marrying 30 to 40 malt and grain whiskies, then resting the blend in oak for another 3 to 6 months before bottling.

That second rest is the double aging the house is known for, and it is why the whisky lands soft rather than sharp. Bacardi has owned Dewar's since 1998. Master Blender Stephanie Macleod has taken the range further with the four stage Double Double series. We have poured these bottles across this counter for three decades.

Good to know

Dewar's questions, answered

Is Dewar's a single malt or blended Scotch?
Dewar's is a blended Scotch whisky. It marries 30 to 40 single malt and grain whiskies, with Aberfeldy Highland single malt as the heart of the blend, then rests the combined spirit in oak before bottling.
Who owns Dewar's?
Bacardi Limited has owned Dewar's since 1998. The brand was founded in 1846 by John Dewar in Perth, Scotland, and is now run with Aberfeldy as its Highland home distillery.
What is double aging in Dewar's?
After the malt and grain whiskies are blended, the liquid returns to oak casks to marry for another 3 to 6 months. That second rest is the double aging process, and it softens the blend before bottling.
What is the ABV of Dewar's White Label?
Dewar's White Label is 40% alcohol by volume, or 80 proof. The core range holds that figure, while some special releases run higher, so check the label on any limited expression.
