The story behind Cousino-macul
Cousino Macul has been in the same family since 1856, when Matias Cousino bought the Maipo Valley estate just south of Santiago. His son Luis and daughter in law Isidora Goyenechea built the winery into a business, and it is the only 19th century Chilean producer still wholly owned and operated by the founding family. Luis brought French vine material to Chile in 1860, and those ungrafted vines on their own rootstocks survived the phylloxera years that flattened Europe.
That original genetic stock is still propagated through a decade long massal selection in the estate nurseries. For the Sauvignon Blanc, all that history serves a simple purpose: clean fruit, no oak, and a mineral spine. We have poured it for customers who want a crisp white without ceremony.
