Cointreau Cordials
French orange liqueur, distilled in Angers since 1885.
The story behind Cointreau
Cointreau began in 1849, when brothers Adolphe and Édouard-Jean Cointreau opened a family distillery in Angers, in the Loire Valley. The clear orange liqueur you know arrived in 1885, perfected by Édouard Cointreau, and the recipe has not wandered since. Four ingredients: neutral alcohol drawn from northern French sugar beets, water, sugar, and orange peel. Nothing else, no artificial flavor.
Those peels are the work. Sweet and bitter oranges from Brazil, Tunisia, Ghana, Morocco and Spain, some dried, some fresh, macerated and then distilled through 35 custom copper alembic stills to pull the aromatic oils. The flagship stays clear and unaged so the fruit reads clean. It took Gold at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and the brand was winning medals as far back as the Laval Exhibition in 1857.

Pricing here runs from $3.69 for the 50mL up to $73.99 for the 1.75L, and the math favors size. The 375mL sits at $23.99, the 1L at $42.99, and the 750mL at $38.99 when it is in stock. Cointreau Noir, the Cognac blend, is $41.99. If you mix margaritas more than twice a month, the liter is the honest buy. All bottles are 80 proof. Liter size keeps a party pouring without a mid-night store run.
Small bottle, full proof, enough to test neat over ice.
