The story behind Captain Morgan
Captain Morgan was introduced in 1944 by Samuel Bronfman's Seagram Company, named for Sir Henry Morgan, the 17th-century Welsh privateer who became Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. The recipe traces to a Kingston pharmacy run by the Levy Brothers, who infused raw Seagram rum with herbs and spices. Today the rum sold in the US is distilled in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands.
It starts as molasses from sugarcane, fermented with a proprietary yeast and run through continuous column stills. The clear distillate rests up to a year in charred white oak bourbon barrels, which gives it color and oak backbone, then a secret blend of Caribbean spices, fruit extracts and Madagascar vanilla goes in. No grapes, no agave, just cane and patience.
