The story

The story behind Cain

Cain Vineyard & Winery was founded in 1980, when Jerry and Joyce Cain bought 550 acres of the old McCormick Ranch and planted Bordeaux varieties between 1,400 and 2,100 feet up the Mayacamas range, in what became the Spring Mountain District AVA. Christopher Howell has directed winemaking since 1991.

What separates Cain from most modern Napa reds is discipline. Native yeast ferments, gentle destemming, no heavy chemical alteration, classic barrel aging. The house style runs to lower alcohol, higher natural acidity and savory, earthy complexity rather than ripe fruit. Cain was also an early Napa voice for blending all five red Bordeaux grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, instead of leaning on one.

Cain cocktails and pairings

Cain's acidity and earthy tannin want fat and salt, not sweetness. Keep it simple and let the wine do the talking.
Good to know

Cain questions, answered

Where is Cain wine from?
Cain is from Napa Valley, California, on Spring Mountain in the Mayacamas range at 1,400 to 2,100 feet. The estate sits in the Spring Mountain District AVA and was founded in 1980 by Jerry and Joyce Cain.
What grapes are in Cain Five?
Cain Five is built from all five classic red Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Cain was an early Napa proponent of blending all five rather than leading with a single grape.
Is Cain wine dry or sweet?
Cain red blends are dry. They are fermented with native yeast and aged in barrel, showing savory, earthy notes, firm tannin and higher natural acidity rather than residual sugar or ripe fruit sweetness.
How should I serve Cain red blend?
Serve Cain at cool cellar temperature, roughly 60 to 65 degrees, in a standard Bordeaux glass. Decant an hour for the younger blends and longer for Cain Five, and pair with grilled beef, lamb or aged hard cheese.
