Burlotto Barolo
Verduno Nebbiolo, foot crushed and aged in old oak since 1850.
The story behind Burlotto
Giovan Battista Burlotto founded this estate in Verduno in 1850, in the heart of the Barolo DOCG zone. He was among the first in Piedmont to bottle and sell his own wine under his name instead of shipping casks, and the house became official supplier to the Royal House of Savoy. It also went on the 1899 Arctic Expedition led by the Duke of the Abruzzi, which tells you something about how the wine traveled.
Today Fabio Alessandria, a descendant, makes Burlotto Barolo from 100% Nebbiolo, fermented with indigenous yeasts in open top French oak and aged about three years in large neutral Slavonian and Allier barrels. The Monvigliero is whole cluster, trodden by foot, macerated up to 60 days. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Which Burlotto is right for you?
Burlotto is scarce, so we price to what we actually have on the shelf. The Langhe Freisa runs $25.98, an honest entry into the estate and the grape. Barolo Acclivi sits at $66.99, old vine Verduno fruit blended from the top sites. Cannubi is $69.99 and sells out fast, so call before you drive over. Monvigliero and the classic Barolo move through collector channels well above these numbers. Buy Burlotto online when it shows in stock, or ask us to hold a bottle.
Same house, same firm tannin, a fraction of the Barolo price.
Old vine fruit from the estate's best sites, aged in big neutral oak.
Tiny 0.7 hectare plot, destemmed and structured for a long sleep.
Burlotto cocktails and pairings
Serve Burlotto at 60 to 65 degrees and decant young bottles two to three hours. The tannin wants fat and salt.
