The story

The story behind Brugal

Don Andrés Brugal Montaner founded Brugal in 1888 in Puerto Plata, on the Dominican Republic's north coast, and the family has run a rum house there ever since. Distillation happens in San Pedro de Macorís, and fourth and fifth generation Brugal descendants still serve as Maestros Roneros, blending every release. Edrington took a majority stake in 2008, but the family hand on the wood.

What sets Brugal apart is the dry profile and the barrel program. The rums are column distilled from molasses, then aged in American oak, and the house leans on its own cooperage and a solera style of blending rather than added sugar. That is why a Brugal tastes drier than most Caribbean rums at the same age, and why bartenders reach for it when a cocktail needs backbone instead of syrup.

Good to know

Brugal questions, answered

Is Brugal rum from the Dominican Republic?
Yes. Brugal was founded in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic in 1888 by Don Andrés Brugal Montaner, with distillation in San Pedro de Macorís. It remains a Dominican brand, now majority owned by Edrington since 2008.
What kind of rum is Brugal?
Brugal is a dry, column distilled rum made from molasses and aged in American oak. The house avoids added sugar, so the profile reads drier and more wood driven than most sweet Caribbean rums at the same age.
What is Brugal 1888 rum?
Brugal 1888 is the house's double aged expression, matured in American oak and finished in sherry casks. Expect raisin, toffee and a long dry finish. It sits at the top of the range at $39.99 for 750mL.
How do you drink Brugal rum?
Sip Extra Viejo or 1888 neat or over one cube. Use Blanco Especial in daiquiris and mojitos, and Anejo in rum and cola or an old fashioned. Pair any of them with salty cheese, cured meat or grilled pork.
