The story

The story behind Boyd & Blair

Boyd & Blair comes out of Glenshaw, Pennsylvania, just outside Pittsburgh, where Pennsylvania Pure Distilleries was founded by Barry Young, a former chemist, and C. Prentiss Orr, a marketing consultant. The first bottles shipped in 2008. The name honors two family ancestors, James Boyd Rafferty and Dr. William Blair.

What separates this vodka is the mash. It is 100 percent Pennsylvania potatoes, Katahdin and other high starch varieties, bought from regional farm co-ops, then fermented on champagne yeast instead of distillers yeast. Distillation happens in small batches on a 1,200 liter copper hybrid pot and column still, and only the hearts of the run are kept. Every bottle is filled, corked, wax dipped and batch numbered by hand.
