The story

The story behind Bols

Bols started in Amsterdam in 1575, when the Bulsius family began distilling spirits in a city already trading citrus and spice from every known sea lane. Lucas Bols, born 1652, carried the family name across Europe. Four and a half centuries later the house still works the same two ways: hard botanicals like orange peels, seeds and roots go through the still into a clear esprit, while softer fruit is macerated in neutral spirit into a colored tincture, then blended with sugar and real juice.

That is why a bottle of Bols Triple Sec tastes like peel rather than candy. We have sold this line for over thirty years, and the bartenders keep coming back for the same reason.

Buying guidance

Which Bols is right for you?

Bols sits in the value tier, and that is the point. Our Bols Triple Sec 1L runs $8.99, the cheapest way to put real orange peel into a round of margaritas without thinking twice. Creme de Cacao, white or dark, is $14.99, Creme de Cassis and Creme de Menthe Green match it, and Apricot Brandy and Blackberry Brandy land at $15.99. The liter bottles stretch further than most 750s at twice the money. Genever, a different animal, is $36.99 for 750mL.

Bols cocktails and pairings

Citrus Bols wants salt and acid; the darker bottles want chocolate. Keep it simple.
Good to know

Bols questions, answered

What is Bols liqueur?
Bols is a Dutch cordial and liqueur brand founded in Amsterdam in 1575. Its range is built on natural botanical extracts, either distilled into esprits or macerated into tinctures, then blended with spirit, sugar and water.
Where is Bols made?
Bols is made in the Netherlands and traces its origin to Amsterdam, where the Bulsius family began distilling in 1575. The brand remains tied to Dutch distilling tradition and its genever heritage.
Is Bols Triple Sec the same as Cointreau?
No. Both are orange liqueurs, but Bols Triple Sec is lower in alcohol and priced in the value tier, while Cointreau is a premium triple sec bottled at 40 percent ABV. Bols suits high volume mixing.
How do you drink Bols Creme de Cacao?
Bols Creme de Cacao is a modifier, not a sipper. Use the dark for grasshoppers, mudslides and chocolate martinis, the white where you want cocoa flavor without color, and both over vanilla ice cream.
