The Long Island Wine & Spirit Merchant TeamTasting notes
Nose
Dried cherry leads, then worn leather and a curl of tobacco leaf. Forest floor and a faint balsamic lift emerge as it sits in the glass.
Palate
Medium bodied and silky, with resolved tannins that barely grip. Dried cherry and leather arrive first, tobacco and dried herb follow, kept lively by bright Sangiovese acidity.
Finish
Long and savory, echoing tobacco and dried fruit, with a clean mineral edge that lingers.
How to serve and what to pour it with
Serve at about 62 to 65 degrees, slightly below room temperature. Use a wide bowl Burgundy glass to let the dried fruit and leather open up. Decant 30 to 45 minutes, since a wine this age can throw sediment and needs air to wake. Stand the bottle upright a day ahead and pour gently.
