How to Choose Portuguese White Wine on Long Island
Portugal makes some of the most distinctive white wine in Europe, and most of it never gets the attention it deserves. The country’s white grapes are largely indigenous: Alvarinho, Loureiro, Arinto, Encruzado, Rabigato, and Viosinho. You will rarely find them anywhere else, which makes exploring Portuguese whites a genuine adventure for anyone who already knows their way around chardonnay.
Start with the style, not the label
- Vinho Verde: From the cool, rainy northwest. Low alcohol (often 9 to 11.5 percent), high acidity, a light spritz in some bottlings, and flavors of lime, green apple, and white flowers. Alvarinho bottlings are the fullest and most serious.
- Douro white: The same terraced valley famous for Port, but the whites are dry, mineral, and textured. Rabigato and Viosinho bring stone fruit and a saline edge. Bote and Monte Cascas Douro White are excellent entry points.
- Alentejo and Lisboa: Warmer, rounder whites with citrus, melon, and sometimes a touch of oak. Antao Vaz and Fernao Pires lead here.
