Burgundy red means one grape: Pinot Noir, grown in the Burgundy region of eastern France. Everything else is place. The Côte de Nuits, north of Beaune, gives firmer, darker, age-worthy reds. The Côte de Beaune, south of it, gives reds with more perfume and silk. The regional Bourgogne appellation spreads across the whole area and delivers the value. If you like lighter, earthy reds, this is your category. If you lean toward bolder fruit, browse our cabernet selection instead, and for white Burgundy, which is Chardonnay, see chardonnay.
Read the label by tier
- Bourgogne Rouge: entry tier, fresh red cherry and earth, best value, drink young.
- Village: a named commune such as Beaune or Gevrey-Chambertin, more depth and structure.
- Premier Cru: a specific vineyard inside a village, more concentration and ageability.
- Grand Cru: the top 33 vineyards, rare and expensive, built for the cellar.
What to expect in the glass
Burgundy red is pale ruby, not inky. Expect tart cherry, raspberry, rose petal, forest floor, and a savory, mineral finish. Tannin is light to moderate and acidity is high, which makes it one of the most food-flexible reds you can pour. Serve slightly cool, around 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, in a wide bowl.
Pairings
- Roast chicken, duck, and pork loin
- Mushroom risotto and earthy vegetarian dishes
- Soft washed-rind cheeses such as Époisses
- Salmon and tuna, seared rare
