Whispering Angel Rose
Provence rose, pale as a ballet slipper, bone dry.
The story behind Whispering Angel
Whispering Angel comes out of Chateau d'Esclans, northeast of Saint-Tropez in the Cotes de Provence. Sacha Lichine bought the estate and launched the label in 2006, bringing in Patrick Leon, the winemaker behind years at Chateau Mouton Rothschild, to rethink what Provence rose could be. LVMH now holds a controlling 55 percent stake; Lichine keeps 45 and still runs the place.
The grapes are Grenache, Cinsault and Rolle, with Syrah and Mourvedre in some vintages. Fruit is picked at night, sorted optically, and fermented in stainless steel on fine lees, no oak, which is why it stays crisp instead of woody. We have poured it across this counter for years, and it still moves faster than anything else in the pink section.
