The story

The story behind Veuve Clicquot

Veuve Clicquot was founded in Reims in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot. In 1805 his son Francois died, and his 27 year old widow Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin took the house over. The name means Widow Clicquot, and she built it into a global empire. She is credited with the riddling table in 1816, the first recorded vintage Champagne in 1810, and the first blended rose in 1818.

The house style leans on Pinot Noir, roughly half the Yellow Label blend, with Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier filling it out. Up to 40 to 50 percent reserve wines from older harvests hold the flavor steady year to year, and the bottles rest on their lees in the chalk crayeres under Reims for 30 to 36 months, well past the legal 15.

Good to know

Veuve Clicquot questions, answered

Is Veuve Clicquot real Champagne?
Yes. Veuve Clicquot is authentic Champagne, produced entirely inside the legally designated Champagne appellation in France under the region's strict rules and traditional method.
What does Veuve Clicquot mean in English?
Veuve translates to widow in French, so the name means Widow Clicquot. It honors Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin, who took over the house after her husband died in 1805.
Is Veuve Clicquot owned by Moet?
Not directly, but they share a parent. Veuve Clicquot and Moet & Chandon are both owned by LVMH, the luxury group, and operate as separate Champagne houses within that portfolio.
How long does a bottle of Veuve Clicquot last unopened?
Unopened non-vintage Yellow Label holds peak quality about 3 years after purchase. Vintage bottles and La Grande Dame can be cellared 10 to 25 years or more in a cool, dark place.
Can I get Veuve Clicquot delivered or pick it up locally?
Yes. We offer same-day or next-day delivery across Nassau and Suffolk, free curbside pickup in Commack, and free local delivery on orders over $250. Call (631) 343-7200 to confirm stock.
