Veedercrest Cabernet
Napa hillside Cabernet, poured in Commack since the label's revival.
The story behind Veedercrest
Veedercrest was founded in 1972 by Al Baxter, a UC Berkeley philosophy PhD and amateur winemaker, with Ron Fenolio and the Ring family. The label went quiet in the mid-1980s and Fenolio brought it back starting with the 2005 vintage. The house built its name on hillside fruit from Mount Veeder, St. Helena and Oakville, and on a habit that was radical at the time: full disclosure front labels listing residual sugar, alcohol and total acidity.
Veedercrest is also credited with California's first true five-variety Bordeaux style blend using Malbec. Mountain reds here see extended oak, typically 36 to 54 months in new French barrels. The flagship Mount Veeder bottling historically drew from the steep, low yield Pym-Rae vineyard once owned by Robin Williams.
