The story

The story behind Toro De Piedra

Toro De Piedra means Stone Bull, and the name comes straight from a sculpture by Chilean artist Palolo Valdes. The wine behind it is made by Vina Requingua, founded in 1961 by Santiago Achurra Larrain in the Sagrada Familia zone of the Curico Valley. It is still family run. Winemaker Benoit Fitte took the cellar in 2001 and built this line around concentration and structure from Central Valley fruit.

The Cabernet is hand picked from alluvial, gravelly soils in Curico, Maule and Colchagua, given a four day cold maceration, then aged 12 months or more in French and American oak. That oak is where the chocolate and coffee notes come from, not sugar.

Good to know

Toro De Piedra questions, answered

Is Toro De Piedra a sweet or dry wine?
It is a fully dry red wine. The vanilla and chocolate notes come from 12 months or more in toasted French and American oak barrels, not from residual sugar, so the fruit reads ripe but the finish stays dry.
What awards and scores does Toro De Piedra typically receive?
It regularly scores 90 to 92 points from critics like James Suckling and the Descorchados guide. Those scores land well above its price class, which is a big part of why we have carried the label for years.
How long can I cellar a bottle of Toro De Piedra Cabernet?
A Gran Reserva bottle can be cellared 5 to 8 years at proper temperature. It is built to drink now too, with supple tannins, so there is no penalty for opening it this weekend instead of waiting.
How should I serve Toro De Piedra Cabernet?
Serve it slightly cool, 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit, in a wide Bordeaux glass. Decant 30 to 45 minutes so the oak settles into the fruit, and pair it with grilled ribeye, lamb chops or smoked cheese.
Do you deliver Toro De Piedra locally or ship it?
We deliver same-day or next-day across Nassau and Suffolk, with free local delivery over $250 and free curbside pickup in Commack. Spirits and wine do not ship from this store, so call (631) 343-7200 to confirm stock.
