The story

The story behind Talisker

Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill founded Talisker in 1830 at Carbost on the Isle of Skye, the island's first legal distillery and its only working one for over 130 years. The barley comes mostly from Muir of Ord, medium-peated to roughly 18 to 22 ppm, and the water runs off the Cnoc nan Speireag springs over peat-rich ground.

Since 1928 the distillery has double-distilled through five pot stills, two wash and three spirit, with purifier loops in the lyne arms. Condensation happens in traditional outdoor wooden worm tubs, not shell-and-tube condensers, which keeps copper contact low and the spirit heavy and oily. That is why the flagship is bottled at 45.8% ABV, and why the black pepper finish stays sharp.

Good to know

Talisker questions, answered

Is Talisker a smoky or peaty Scotch?
Talisker is a moderately smoky and peaty whisky, peated to roughly 18 to 22 ppm. The peat smoke is distinct but less medicinal and heavy than Islay malts such as Lagavulin or Laphroaig.
Where is Talisker made?
Talisker is made at the distillery in the village of Carbost on the Isle of Skye in Scotland's Inner Hebrides. Founded in 1830, it was the island's first legal distillery and its only working one for over 130 years.
Who owns the Talisker brand?
Talisker is owned by Diageo, the multinational drinks corporation. It is marketed as one of the pillars of Diageo's Classic Malts selection, which is how most American drinkers first met the bottle.
Why is Talisker bottled at 45.8% ABV instead of 40% or 43%?
Standard Talisker expressions are bottled at a historical 45.8% ABV, or 91.6 proof. That strength preserves the heavy, oily texture from the worm tub condensers and keeps the black pepper finish sharp.
Does Talisker triple-distill its whisky?
No. The distillery triple-distilled during the 19th and early 20th centuries but switched permanently to double distillation in 1928. Today five pot stills, two wash and three spirit, do the work.
