The story

The story behind Steeple Jack

Steeple Jack Shiraz comes out of South Australia, with fruit drawn mainly from cool-climate estate vineyards in McLaren Vale and Currency Creek. The label belongs to Shaw Family Vintners, the family business run by Richard and Marie Shaw, who grew their holdings from 5 acres to more than 1,200. The Steeple Jack tier itself started in 2004, named for the steeplejacks, the tradesmen who climbed early Australian towers to finish the stonework.

It is 100% Shiraz, made as an uncomplicated varietal wine that keeps the fruit front and center. Expect blackberry and stewed plum, a lift of vanillin, mocha and white pepper. Alcohol runs about 13.5% to 14.5% by vintage. We have poured this style for Long Island customers for years because it delivers real regional character at a value price.

Serve Steeple Jack Shiraz slightly cool, 60 to 65 degrees, in a wide-bowled glass. The soft fruit and white pepper want rich meat and bold spice.

Good to know

Steeple Jack questions, answered

Is Steeple Jack Shiraz the same as Syrah?
Yes. Shiraz and Syrah are genetically identical names for the same dark-skinned grape. Shiraz is simply the traditional Australian term, so a bottle labeled either way is the same variety.
Who makes Steeple Jack wine?
Steeple Jack is produced by Shaw Family Vintners, a family winemaking business in South Australia run by Richard and Marie Shaw. The Steeple Jack tier was established in 2004.
Where does the name Steeple Jack come from?
The name honors the historic steeplejacks, the tradesmen who scaled high towers and steeples to finish stonework in early Australian townships. The label nods to that ballast stone building era.
Is Steeple Jack Shiraz a dry or sweet wine?
It is a dry red wine. Ripe, jammy fruit can read sweet on the nose, but residual sugar is minimal and the style is dry, with blackberry, plum and white pepper.
