The story

The story behind St Germain

St Germain was created in 2007 by Robert J. Cooper, an American spirits executive who wanted a liqueur built on fresh blossoms rather than dried ones. The elderflowers are hand picked in the French Alps each spring, then macerated into a neutral spirit base with a small measure of fruit and aromatic components. Bacardi acquired the brand in 2013.

That short harvest window is the whole story. Blossoms fade fast, so the picking, the maceration and the blending all run on a clock. What lands in the bottle is delicate: floral first, soft citrus behind it, a light sweetness that stays out of the way. We have poured it for Long Island customers for years, and it still earns its shelf space.

Buying guidance

Which St Germain is right for you?

Pricing here is straightforward. The St Germain Elderflower 750mL is $34.99, and that is the bottle most people should buy. The 375mL runs $19.99 and the 200mL is $18.99, both useful if you want to test a cocktail before committing to a full bottle. Call ahead on the smaller sizes, since stock moves. The 750mL is the reliable one, and it holds up for months in the refrigerator once opened.

Good to know

St Germain questions, answered

What is St Germain made from?
St Germain is made from elderflowers hand picked in the French Alps each spring, macerated into a neutral spirit base with a small amount of fruit and aromatic components. The blossoms are fresh, not dried, which is why the flavor stays delicate.
What alcohol is in St Germain?
St Germain is an elderflower liqueur bottled at 20 percent alcohol by volume, or 40 proof. That is low for a liqueur, so it mixes gently and rarely overwhelms a cocktail. Serve it chilled or over ice.
Is St Germain a wine or a spirit?
St Germain is neither wine nor a straight spirit. It is a liqueur, which puts it in the cordials category, made from a neutral spirit base sweetened and flavored with elderflower. Treat it as a modifier, not a base pour.
What does St Germain taste like?
St Germain tastes floral first, with soft citrus behind it and a light sweetness that finishes clean. It is delicate rather than syrupy, so a small measure goes a long way in a spritz, a gin drink, or a glass of sparkling wine.
