The story behind St. George
St. George Spirits opened in 1982, when Jörg Rupf started distilling eau-de-vie in Alameda, California. The distillery now works out of a 65,000 square foot former naval air station hangar on the island, with Lance Winters as master distiller and Dave Smith as head distiller and blender. Ten James Beard Award nominations for Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Producer sit behind that address.
The vodka base is the odd part, and the good part. St. George distills California Bartlett pears, the same fruit behind its flagship brandy, up to 95.1% ABV on custom Holstein stills, then blends that spirit with non-GMO American corn. The pear character survives as texture rather than flavor. Every core expression is unaged and bottled at 40% ABV.
